Critic (Critico)

A film by Kleber Mendoca Filho

SYNOPSIS

70 critics and filmmakers discuss cinema from the age old conflict between the artist and the observer, the creator and the critic. From 1998 to 2007, Kleber Mendonça Filho has collected points of view about this relationship in Brazil, USA and Europe, using his personal experience as both filmmaker and critic. Crítico opens a window to an art which is more and more judged by the industry and which struggles to remain human in the way it is realized and observed.

ABOUT THE FILMMAKER

Kleber Mendonça Filho was born in Recife, northeastern Brazil. He graduated in journalism and has worked extensively as a film critic and film programmer at Recife’s top alternative cinema. In the 90’s, he made documentaries, experimental films and fiction as a videomaker. As a filmmaker, he works with whichever means are available (digital, 35mm, stills, animation). The focus of his work is people, love and fear. His five short films have won over 70 awards in Brazil and around the world, with selections in festivals like Bafici, Karlovy-Vary, Rotterdam, Clermont-Ferrand and Cannes (Directors’Fortnight).
